The UK is the shortened name of the United Kingdom of Great Britain – it’s a kingdom. This means, it is ruled over by a monarch.
Britain has an interesting history, in that, despite a civil war to overthrow the monarchy, we allowed the monarch to come back, after a short spell, subject to some parliamentary oversight.
The monarch – The Queen at the time of writing – gives “honours” to the brightest and best in the realm, on a twice yearly basis.
One of these times is at New Year – these honours are called New Year’s Honours.
The other time is “Birthday Honours” which take place in the summertime, around the Queen’s official birthday.
