After an enthralling test battle, South Africa posted a win in the opening ODI of England’s tour thanks to an impressive knock from Quinton de Kock.

Match Highlights – 1st ODI – South Africa v England 2020
England posted 258/8 with top scoring performances from Denly (87) and Woakes (30) not nearly enough batting first on a track which looked good for a little more.
Shamsi was the pick of the bowlers for the hosts, collecting 3 for 38.
England were unable to get enough with ball in hand, and good knocks from de Kock (107) and Bavuma (98) – who will be disappointed not to pick up a century – were enough to see them over the line to win by seven wickets, with 14 balls remaining: 259/3.
All of England’s bowlers were equally expensive, certainly Woakes was the pick of them, while Root’s part time spin was again productive. The World Champions looked an impact bowler short, but probably this was owing to the middle order in their batting innings not posting a target which applied more pressure: it would be a little unkind to blame them for this, Shamsi’s bowling was probably the difference here.
Root’s run-out and a couple of loose shots aside, this was a more faultless performance by South Africa, who fully deserved the win, than anything else.
